Screen reader tips
Short tips for getting through this site quickly with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, Narrator or TalkBack. They assume you already know the basics of your screen reader.
On every page
- The page starts right after the site name. There is no menu at the top.
- The site menu is at the bottom of every page, under the heading "Site menu". It also links to these tips.
- The "White background" button (for low vision) is the very last item on each page.
- Links are underlined. Nothing opens in a new window.
Compare prices on eBay
- The page starts with the Product field and the Search button. Quantity, ZIP code, price range and the other options come after the button, so you can search without them.
- After a search you are placed on the heading "Results 1 to 10 of …". The note under it says what the totals include and any options you set.
- Each result is one link that starts with the total price, then the brand and model, then only what differs from the other results, such as size or color. Move by links to hear one result per step.
- After result 10, the link "Next 10 results" takes you straight to result 11.
- Below the list are the "Search again" form and "List options". After you change the sort or what each link says first, you are placed on the first result again.
- Each result opens a short item page: the total first, then details from the seller, then the heading "What you can do" with Save to favorites, Open this item on eBay, and Back to results.
Search Amazon
- Type the product and press "Open Amazon results". Department, sort, price and the other filters come after the button.
- Amazon's own page opens in the same tab. Use your browser's Back command to return.
- On Amazon's results page each product name is a level 2 heading, and the first few results are often ads marked "Sponsored".
Favorites and account
- Each saved item is a level 2 heading with its store link, followed by its total and a Remove button. On an item page, signed-in members can use "Email this item to me"; the result is read right under the button.
- On the account page, "Email my favorites" reports the result right under its button.
Keys and gestures that save time
NVDA and JAWS keys work in browse mode (NVDA) or with the virtual cursor (JAWS), which is how web pages normally open. "Insert" can be replaced by Caps Lock if you set your screen reader that way. Add Shift to go backward.
